Civil War Period Cockades – Virginia Mourning Cockade and a Patriotic Cockade
Civil War Period Cockades – Virginia Mourning Cockade and a Patriotic Cockade – These two cockades are typical types from the late prewar to early war period; the mourning cockade features a three piece, Virginia staff officer’s, coat size button, affixed to a black silk covered pasteboard disk; the shank of the button is attached via a small piece of bright red, kersey weave wool; hanging on the front, from beneath the Virginia button are two short lengths of black silk ribbon affixed to a black ribbon bow, that is beneath the Virginia button. This cockade remains in very good condition. The second cockade features what appears to be a two-piece, ornate civilian, coat size button; this button has a cross-hatched background, with a raised dots star covering most of the face of the button; the button rests on a fan-like background of red, silk ribbon, with two extensions hanging below the button; the ribbon front of the cockade is sewn to thin paper, and the button’s shank extends through a small disk of cotton mesh, with the shank attached to the latter by a thin strip of the same mesh. This cockade is in overall good condition but is somewhat fragile. Multiple war time and antebellum images depict Southern military men, ladies and even children wearing cockades.
