Civil War U.S. Regulation Navy Seaman’s Flat Hat – This hat is representative of so-called flat hat authorized by the U.S. Navy for wear by enlisted sailors, in 1852; these hats became the standard for the navy, through most of the 19th century, until replaced by the “Dixie Cup” cap in the early 20th century. Constructed of dark blue wool, the cap remains in excellent condition, with only one, very small insect nip; the color remains strong, as well. Atop the crown are three concentric, serrated edge, felt rings, in dark blue, red and sky blue colors, all hand sewn to the top of the cap; affixed to the middle of these three disks is a small metal button, covered with in cream colored, embroidered cotton, thereby exhibiting a red, white and blue appearance. The interior of the cap is unlined; the original sweat band, constructed of a light brown cotton, remains complete and in place. At the back exterior of the cap are four small, japanned, brass rings, through which a strand of black silk ribbon is threaded for tightening purposes – these rings were regulation prior to the Civil War; there is a small tear that could be readily repaired, at the juncture of the rings and lacings. These Civil War period caps are always difficult to find, and this example remains in exceptional condition.
