Civil War Union 2nd Corps Officer’s Forage Cap – This high-quality forage cap remains in excellent condition, with no insect nips or weak areas. The fine quality, broadcloth wool that composes the body of the cap, retains its original, indigo-dyed, deep blue color. The original chin strap, with its original, leather keeper, terminates on either side of the cap with Eagle I, officer, infantry, cuff size buttons. The interior of the cap is lined in a semi-quilted, black silk, that is in overall, very good condition, with a couple of minor wear tears. The black-lacquered brim which is in excellent condition, is bound. The original, fine grade, leather sweat band remains complete and in equally good shape. On the exterior crown of the cap is a bright red (1st Division), original 2nd Corps, kersey wool insignia, highlighted with simulated leaf veins, made from silvered cording. Beneath the 2nd Corps insignia are officer grade, faux bullion insignia for Company E, 53rd Regiment. This is a striking example of a fine quality, Civil War officer’s forage cap, in superb condition.
