Original Civil War Federal Issue Cavalry Shell Jacket in Near Unissued Condition
$2,650
Original Civil War Federal Issue Cavalry Shell Jacket in Near Unissued Condition – Although we have had several of both the Cavalry and Artillery Civil War shell jackets, this Cavalry shell jacket is by far, the best condition example we have had. The jacket retains strong color in both the blue, indigo-dyed wool body and the bright yellow color of the worsted wool, piping of the jacket; there are no insect nips whatsoever; the original, wool lining is in near perfect, undamaged condition, as are both white cotton or muslin sleeve linings; both original pillows remain on the lower back area of the jacket, and all original front closure, collar and cuff buttons are in place and firmly attached; additionally, the original, japanned hook and eye closure device is in place at the collar area. Stamped in the interior of the right shoulder lining is indication that the jacket is a Size 2 (the number 2 and two dots are both stamped), and that the jacket was the product of the Federal Arsenal in Cincinnati. There is virtually no wear noticeable on the coat, and it appears that the jacket may never have been worn. These jackets were commonly issued throughout the first half of the war, ultimately many being replaced with four-button sack coats.
