Original Civil War Federal Issue Type II Enlisted Man’s Forage Cap
$3,150
Original Civil War Federal Issue Type II Enlisted Man’s Forage Cap – This is an excellent example of a M1858, Type II, Federal issue, enlisted man’s forage cap. The Type II cap had a larger crown disc, more cylindrical body and a flatter, more square brim, as compared to the Type I cap. This cap remains in very good condition, with no visible insect nips; the deep blue color of the wool is strong. There is a minor seam separation which we will have our textile conservator repair. The brim exhibits some weather impacted, minor warping, but is strong with no finish flaking. The chin strap is complete and retains its original brass adjustment keeper; the strap is firmly affixed to both sides of the crown by two general service, eagle cuff buttons. The interior lining is constructed of a light brown, polished cotton, which remains intact. The sweatband is nearly complete; it exhibits some obvious wear related cracking and finish scuffing. The crown of the cap has original, war period insignia – an Infantry horn, a large company letter “C” and regimental letter “8”; the attachment loops for these insignia were inserted through the crown of the cap, in the manner that was completed during the war; we cannot confirm whether these insignia are original to the cap, although they appear so; we can confirm that these insignia are original, Civil War period insignia.
