Original Civil War Union Infantry Officer’s Chasseur Style Kepi Cap – This cap is definitively a Civil War period cap; it displays the following wartime manufactured characteristics: constructed of indigo dyed, English broadcloth wool; indented front crown in profile; bound, thin leather brim; leather adjustable chinstrap affixed to the cap via two Eagle “I” cuff buttons; black silk interior; deep burgundy colored, Moroccan leather sweatband. Most of the period maker’s label remains in the interior crown, although there is not sufficient lettering remaining to determine the actual maker, although the address enumerated is: “608 Arch St., Philadelphia, Pa.” The cap remains in overall excellent condition, retaining strong, deep blue color; the sweatband is fully intact with no splits or breaks with some minor wear induced scuffed areas the chinstrap is in good condition with the exception of a small, repaired break on the right side near the Eagle button; the silk lining is all in place, but multiple splitting areas from period wear; there are one or two very small insect nips. This cap is an excellent example of a wartime, infantry officer’s cap.
