$1,950
Pre-Civil War to Early Civil War U.S. Navy Ensign’s Wheel Hat – This is the first of this type of U.S. Navy hat that we have had or even encountered. The hat is constructed of a fine, indigo-dyed, English broadcloth wool, with a black lacquered, leather, curved bound brim; there is a bullion faux chinstrap, with two pre-war, U.S. Navy cuff buttons at either end; affixed to the front of the cap is a pre-war, bullion, U.S. Navy Ensign rank badge. Uniquely, the interior of the hat is completely lined with a high quality, burgundy colored, Moroccan type leather, perhaps used to provide some protection from salt water; the sweat band is made of the same leather; embossed on the interior of the leather crown is the following:
“BENT & BUSH
BOSTON”
Bent and Bush is well known to collectors as a prominent, mid-19th century manufacturer and purveyor of high-quality military uniforms, headgear and presentation swords; the company originated in 1841, in Lowell, Massachusetts, moving to Boston in 1849 opening at the corner of Court and Washington Streets. Prior to the Civil War and during the war, Bent and Bush became established as a manufacturer and purveyor of high-quality militaria; during the Civil War the company became significant suppliers of headgear.
