Superb Unworn Group of Civil War Medical Officer’s / Colonel’s Shoulder Boards and Dress Epaulette Insignia in the Original Horstmann and Allien Box – This group of Civil War medical officer’s insignia remains in unused condition and is contained in its original pasteboard box; the box is inscribed in pencil on the bottom, as follows:
“Horstmann Bros + Allen
no 8 Maiden Lane
New York”
Horstmann, with Allen (Allien), would remain at this address from 1852 to 1876. There are three small, paper oval labels still adhering to the box, placed there when it was in the storefront in New York. Inside the box is contained: a finely crafted pair of Colonel of the Medical Corps shoulder boards – these have double gold bullion borders, with a deep, emerald green-colored, velvet interior background, surmounted by a full colonel’s gold and silver bullion eagle – surrounding the double bullion, the boards have a black wool border and have diminutive, black japanned, frock coat attachment hooks at all four corners. Also in the box are a pair of silver bullion silver eagles for attachment to the officer’s dress epaulettes – each eagle still has its original paper backing; a pair of circular dress epaulette regimental insignia each displaying the bullion regimental number “39” on a green wool background; a gold bullion, infantry horn insignia, with a silver regimental number “39” in the crook of the horn, with its original paper backing. All elements of this grouping remain in near minty condition, evidencing no wear whatsoever. The mode of construction of all of these elements are completely indicative of Civil War period of use.
