Id’d Pair of Civil War Federal Regulation Infantry Corporal’s Chevrons

Id’d Pair of Civil War Federal Regulation Infantry Corporal’s Chevrons – This pair of hand-sewn, Civil War, infantry, corporal’s chevrons remain in superior condition. The sky-blue wool of the actual chevrons is different than the usually encountered rough-weave, worsted wool types; the wool comprising these chevrons, is of a better quality and may have either been a state issue or homemade. The chevrons are attached to a dark blue section of a heavier weave wool. When we obtained this pair of chevrons, they were contained in an old envelope that had inked on its exterior the following inscription:

“Corporal’s Chevrons

Nathan Warren

Corp. Co. G. 45th M.V.

1862-3”

Nathan Warren enlisted, at the rank of Corporal, in September, 1862, into Co. G of the 45th Massachusetts Infantry; he mustered out in July, 1863. The regiment embarked in November, 1862 for Beaufort, NC and ultimately was transported to Newbern. Warren’s Company G, went to man Ft. Macon, near Morehead City, NC, in December, 1862. The regiment would be engaged in April, 1863, near Goldsboro, then return to Ft. Spinola, near Newbern, mustering out, in Boston, in July, 1863.
