Regimentally and Company Id’d Civil War Bone Cravat or Neckerchief Slide

Regimentally and Company Id’d Civil War Bone Cravat or Neckerchief Slide – This Civil War soldier created, bone cravat slide exhibits skilled craftsmanship; on the decoratively scalloped facing element of the slide the soldier carved a patriotic motif shield with stars and stripes, with a ribbon draping the front of the shield on which is the following:

“Co H  5. MASS.”

All of the carved or inset elements – shield, stars, stripes, letters – are filled in with either red or blue paraffin. On the back or slide ring side are carved the initials of the creator of the slide – “W J”; on one side of the ring is carved “U” and on the opposite side is a carved “S”. Although we have diligently tried to identify the war period owner / creator of this cravat ring, we have not been able to match the initials to a Co. H 5^th Mass. soldier. The slide remains in excellent condition.
