Original Civil War Fife with Silver Ferrules – This Civil War period fife is the typical, military fife of the war period. This fife is the more often encountered, one piece, 6-hole, Bb fife; the reinforcing ferrules are silver, and the fife’s black wood, is African Blackwood or Grenadilla. By the early 19th century, warfare had evolved and fifes were no longer practical as combat signaling devices, being gradually replaced by the bugle. They were still used as signaling (as opposed to musical) instruments by American units during the Civil War, but were gradually phased out by the 1880s. This fife remains in excellent, playable condition and is unmarked. The fife measures approximately 17” in length.
