Original Civil War Tinned Sheet Iron Mess Plates – Most of the so-called “mess plates” that we see are merely postwar, tin pie plates. These plates are definitively, Civil War period, soldiers’ mess plates; they are constructed of thin sheet iron that was cold-dipped in tin, to provide a semblance of protection from oxidation. Both plates remain in overall excellent condition, each retaining most of their original tin finish. These were the type of plate that soldiers would carry in their haversacks. The price listed is per plate. Each measures approximately 6.75” – 7” in diameter.
