Patriotic Motif Civil War Soldier Carved Bone Cravat or Neckerchief Slide – During the course of the Civil War, with much time spent by soldiers in camp or, in some cases, imprisoned as POWs, men often, with substantial time on their hands, would carve out of bone, wood or even ivory, scarf, cravat or neckerchief slides, intended to allow the soldier to adequately secure a scarf or cravat thereby enabling the wearer to tighten the textile around the wearer’s neck. Some of these slides that we have had have soldier’s names and regiments enhanced by detailed decorative elements. This example, although not having a name or regiment carved in it, does have an impressive, artfully carved American Eagle and the patriotic motto – “UNION FOR/EVER”. This slide is carved cow bone and remains in excellent condition.
