Rare Pair of Civilian Men’s Trousers in a Checked Pattern Ca. 1855 – We have had a few pairs of men’s civilian trousers; all have been a rather somber and black in color. This pair is one of the first that we have encountered that exhibits an interesting, checked pattern; the pants are constructed of cotton, almost corduroy fabric, with pockets on either side of the front panel fly. The pants were assembled via a combination of predominantly hand sewing, coupled with a small amount of treadle machine work. The buttons are made of bone, mother-of-pearl and composite substance. The front of the pants has a right and left, hip pocket. The back of the pants has a size adjuster, with a dated (1850s), small buckle. Mid-19th century, men’s pants have always been difficult to find; this pair represent a rarely encountered patterned fabric. The pants remain in overall excellent condition.
