This quintessential Confederate long arm is a superb example of the weapons manufactured by the Richmond Armory from 1861 to 1865. The C.S. Richmond rifled musket, noted for its accuracy, was produced in larger numbers than all other Confederate long arms, manufactured during the Civil War. This example, which remains in fine condition, is the Type II, “high hump” version; it features a one-piece barrel of forged steel with “VP” and an eagle head stamped to the left of the breech. Markings on the lock are “1862” behind the hammer and “C.S. RICHMOND, VA” to the right of the hammer. The one-piece stock is oil-finished walnut and remains in very good conditionThis Richmond has all iron elements with the exception of a brass nose cap. We have examined the lock mortise on this gun, and it conforms to the Richmond manufactured weapons. The barrel is 40” in length, with overall length at 55.5”. The three iron barrel bands have the requisite “U” stamped in them, and the ramrod is the swell tip variety, as it should be. The metal of this gun is in excellent condition and all mechanics are functional; the bore is clean with traces of rifling remaining.
