Id’d Virginia Confederate Cockade

This extremely rare Virginia cockade would have adorned a Virginia soldier’s hat or uniform. This example is constructed of silk red, white and blue ribbon, with a two-piece Virginia coat button, most likely made by Horstmann & Allien or Mintzer, at the center of the cockade. The button’s shank was perforated through a war period, hand written receipt, dated February 8, 1862. The receipt, issued by John Hopkins and received by a second soldier whose name is somewhat difficult to determine.

Id’d Virginia Confederate Cockade – This extremely rare Virginia cockade would have adorned a Virginia soldier’s hat or uniform. This example is constructed of silk red, white and blue ribbon, with a two-piece Virginia coat button, most likely made by Horstmann & Allien or Mintzer, at the center of the cockade. The button’s shank was perforated through a war period, hand written receipt, dated February 8, 1862. The receipt, issued by John Hopkins and received by a second soldier whose name is somewhat difficult to determine. Hopkins apparently was delivering artillery and camp related items; included in the list of things encompassed by the receipt are listed “camp kettle” and “whiffletrees” (used with period wagons and artillery caissons). The ribbons retain good color, although they are somewhat fragile. The shank is held in place, in the receipt, by what appears to be a section of bullion, officer’s hat cord. The cockade measures  2.5“ across and 4.5” in height. This is a rare Virginia, Confederate patriotic item rarely found; the names associated with the attached receipt warrant more research.
