Model 1881 Light Artillery Dress Helmet – This fine example of a late Indian War U.S. Army dress helmet is in excellent condition. Its horsehair plume and aiguillette both exhibit great color and are both in excellent condition. Both side buttons depict the crossed cannons, and the front eagle insignia has a tarnished silver regimental number 4 affixed; in addition, the eagle clutches crossed cannons in its talons, an unusual feature. The interior of the helmet is in excellent condition, as is the sweatband; beneath the sweatband is the stamp of the government inspector, as well as the contractor who constructed the helmet – W. H. Horstmann. These 1881 helmets are truly impressive in appearance and are representative of the end of the Indian War era.
