Civil War Regulation Issue Copper Bugle by Klemm & Bros. of Philadelphia
$3,000
Civil War Regulation Issue Copper Bugle by Klemm & Bros. of Philadelphia – This single twist bugle or trumpet with bell garland is stamped on the garland: “Klemm & Bro. / Phila.” These bugles were carried by all service branches – Artillery, Infantry and Cavalry. This bugle is constructed of copper, with a brass garland and ferrules; this is a single twist bugle with the correct period dovetail seam running lengthwise and very visible inside the bell. Klemm had numerous wartime contracts for bugles, trumpets and fifes, as well as drum snares. Pre-war, mid-1850s contracts with Klemm, indicated orders for approximately 50 bugles; extant wartime contracts in 1864, indicated orders for 1,800 bugles, of which it has been estimated that 350 were copper. This example of the latter remains in excellent condition, with only the slightest of tiny dings; the garland is firmly in place and does have some minor rippling. As Chris Nelson mentioned in his definitive discussion in the North-South Trader, several years ago: “If you want only one representative Civil War bugle, this is the one to have.”
