Original Civil War Soldier’s Mess Plate

SOLD

Original Civil War Soldier’s Mess Plate – This plate is constructed of sheet iron that was cold-dipped in tin to prevent corrosion. The plate is definitively Civil War period and typical of the type that soldiers carried in their haversacks. The plate has a slight ridged edge and shallow central depression. The plate remains in excellent condition, with large patches of tin remaining on the bottom or back of the plate. The war period owner of the plate punched a small hole near the rim, perhaps to hang the plate up to dry after washing it or even to suspend the plate from a belt while on the march. The plate measures 9” in diameter.
