Confederate Crudely Made Cone-Shaped Clay Inkwell – We obtained this rare inkwell from the family of the collector / digger who had amassed a large and significant collection, starting in the early 1970s; he hunted in the Fauquier County, Culpeper, Winchester, Brandy Station, Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Fredericksburg areas, so unfortunately, we cannot pinpoint the site of the actual excavation of this inkwell. These seldom seen inkwells have been identified as being Confederate in origin as the majority have been excavated at Confederate camp sites in Virginia; this example, like others occasionally seen, is cone-shaped and crudely made of unglazed, grayish-brown clay; the equally crudely made lip of the inkwell is raised and encircles the opening of the well. Faint concentric circular striations from the turning process in construction of the inkwell are visible on the base and lip. The inkwell remains in excellent condition.
