Early Civil War M1859 McClellan Saddle with Bit and Reins, Girth, Carbine Socket, Cincha and Crupper – This is a fine example of an early war mounted enlisted man’s, M1859 McClellan saddle. The saddle remains in overall very good condition, with no tearing in the rawhide tree; all footed staples are present, as are all of the brass slotted blanket strap ovals; the size shield is in place; the skirts are supple and firmly attached to the tree via the multiple original brass screws; the saddle bag post is in place behind the cantel; both stirrup straps are present, although one appears to have a period, large brass adjustment buckle as a replacement for the issue version; the bent oak stirrups are both present, although neither retains its original leather boot hood; affixed to the saddle is the cincha with its original roller buckle. Both sets of quarter straps are present and are joined by un-spaded D-rings, indicative of early war issue. Attached to the back right quarter strap is an original carbine socket in excellent condition. Attached to the back two iron saddle rings is an original, war period crupper. Also accompanying the saddle is a rarely encountered, Civil War, blue wool and leather girth; additionally, a M1863 Cavalry bit with its original reins also accompanies this saddle. This is truly a fine example of an early war, McClellan saddle in very good condition.
