Pattern 1839 .69 Caliber Round Ball Cartridge Box
$1,850
Pattern 1839 .69 Caliber Round Ball Cartridge Box – These boxes were produced as replacements for the aging 1828 musket box. The boxes were designed for sling carriage only, as there were no belt loops affixed to the back of the box. Army regulations stated that the boxes be capable of carrying 40 rounds of round ball or buck and ball ammunition. Initially, these boxes were issued with white buff leather slings; the slings did not change in style, from 1839 to 1865, although the composite material and color changed from buff leather, from white to black, then to black bridle leather; additionally, late in the 1850s, after many complaints by field soldiers, belt loops were added. The boxes were originally issued with US box plates and M1827 Eagle breast plates – this example retains both original plates. The box has an inside flap, covering the two cartridge tins, both of which remain in place, and an implements pouch. A complete and functional sewn latch tab remains in place, as does an early bulbous style, brass finial. The white buff sling retains its original white to cream coloration, although it is somewhat soiled from use and age – it remains in strong condition; the sling attachment roller buckles are both sewn in place. The box proper remains in overall very good condition, with some age crackling, but no flaking; we did have one of the box “ears” strengthened. These boxes are not often seen, especially in this condition, with both original plates and the white buff sling.
