Confederate Georgia Excavated Gutter Back Georgia Frame Belt Buckle – These simply designed belt buckles were an accoutrement mainstay for many Confederate soldiers. The oft-used descriptor “Georgia” is derived from the large number of these plates found in the state of Georgia; in truth, many of these plates have been excavated throughout southern, Civil War camps and battlefields. This excellent example remains in fine, dug condition. In an attempt to improve upon the design of the plain frame buckle, a channel or “gutter” was cast in the back of the frame; this allowed for strengthening and lightening the plate and saving on brass utilized; additionally, unlike the plain frame plates, the central bar was cast flat with the perimeter of the plate. Both tongues are present; one appears to have a casting flaw or the point snipped off in the field. According to the collector from whom we obtained the plate, this buckle was excavated in Fredericksburg.
