Dug in Fredericksburg Area – Colt Model 1849 Pocket Model Revolver with Scarce 6” Barrel with Six Cylinder Chambers – Remains Fully Capped with All Cylinders Still Loaded – This is one of the better condition, dug pistols we have had; all of the cylinder nipples are capped, and all six of the chambers are loaded. The pistol is rusted, but not flaking whatsoever and in overall excellent dug condition; the brass grip, back strap and trigger guard retain a dark, brass-colored patina; the trigger, wedge and loading lever are in place, as is the hammer; the mainspring is present, but has broken off of the interior of the grip strap. The serial number is visible at the front of the trigger guard but is not completely legible; it is definitely a six-figure number, beginning with “2” – Research indicates that Colt Pocket Model 1849 pistols with serial numbers over 200,000 were manufactured starting in 1862. This revolver has a six-inch barrel and six cylinder chambers – Colt Pocket Model revolvers with six-chamber cylinders were predominantly made between 1860 and 1873; most of Colt’s highly popular 1849 Pocket revolvers had five cylinder chambers, although Colt produced a scarce, six-shot variant of the Model 1849, as well as the later six-shot .36 caliber Colt 1862 Pocket Navy. As exhibited by this example, six-shot pocket models exhibit the following characteristics:

• Manufactured from 1860 to 1873
• 6-chambered .31 caliber models are quite rare, often featuring longer barrels (5 to 6 inches)

One of Colt’s most popular revolvers, these .31 caliber pistols were initially produced starting in 1850 and ultimately ended production in 1873, with over 340,000 revolvers produced. We obtained this pistol from an old collection – the former owner stated that the pistol had been excavated in the Fredericksburg area.
