Civil War Cavalry Shell Jacket Likely Constructed at the Schuylkill Arsenal – Excellent example of the U.S. Model 1858 enlisted man’s, cavalry shell jacket. The jacket remains in overall very good condition, with deep blue color exhibited by the body of the jacket, bright yellow, worsted wool trim, with some minor areas of slight fading; all requisite, original buttons remain in place, as do the pillows on the back of the jacket. The soft cotton muslin lining is in excellent condition, with one small area of seam separation from the body of the jacket – this can be easily repaired (we can have our textile restorer do this for the buyer) and some very small moth holes in the right sleeve. The jacket appears to be completely hand sewn, indicative of manufacture by the Schuylkill Arsenal; the jacket’s sleeve linings, made of the same muslin as the body lining, remain in excellent condition, with the right shoulder stamped with the size of the jacket – “2”. The japanned collar hooks remain in place. This is a fine example of a Civil War, Federal issue, cavalry shell jacket.
