Civil War US Navy Officer’s Visored Cap Bearing the Rank Insignia for Engineer – This cap, which conforms to the U.S. Navy Regulations of 1863, is constructed of a deep blue wool body; the oilcloth bound, tarred leather visor remains in great shape and firmly attached to the cap. The interior lining consists of a brown, polished cotton, tucked beneath the brown, 1.75” sweatband. Across the front of the cap is the original, leather chinstrap, retaining the original, small, brass adjustment buckle and affixed to both sides of the body by Civil War period, U.S. Navy, M1852, cuff buttons. The cap stands approximately 3″ high and remains in exceptionally good condition. Blue wool rank insignia patch on front, surmounted by a gold bullion wreath, indicates that the cap was worn by a navy engineer. This cap is a superior example of a scarce, Civil War, U.S. Navy, officer’s cap.
