U.S. Pattern of 1886 Cavalry Gauntlets – Quartermaster Marked and Name of Soldier Inked in the Cuff – This pair of late Indian War gauntlets remain in overall very good condition, exhibiting period wear and use. The gauntlets are made of brushed, goatskin and utilized cotton thread for the welts in the seams of the thumbs and finger areas. Silk thread was utilized for the decorative stitching on the cuffs and the three welts on the back of each hand. Inside the right cuff is stamped:

In addition to the Quartermaster stamping, the following name is inked:

Additionally, the name of the contracted manufacturer of the gauntlets is stamped in the same area as the above stamping and written soldier’s name; the contractor’s name is difficult to discern, as is the date of manufacture. The gauntlets size – “91/2” is also stamped above the inked name.
