High Quality Union Officer’s Frock Coat – Captain of the Infantry – Early War with Inked Date of 1861 and Name – This frock coat was made sometime at the onset of the Civil War for an officer of means – the coat is constructed of a very high grade of indigo-dyed, English broadcloth wool, with a black silk, quilted interior lining. Noteworthy is the name, which we have tried multiple times to decipher to no avail, and the accompanying date of “1861” written just below the name – this appears in the upper right shoulder lining of the coat. Additional period characteristics are: functional cuffs, Eagle I buttons throughout with hand whipped buttonholes, “balloon elbows”, skirt lengths comparable to upper body height, equal width striped cotton sleeve linings, brown polished cotton lined tail pockets, velvet lined collar, double bullion early war ribbon tie-down Captain of the Infantry rank straps, unhemmed skirts and japanned double hook and eye waist area closure modes. The coat remains in overall very good condition; the interior silk lining has some distinct use-induced, wear areas, with some batting visible in the upper shoulder area. We are continuing to try to determine the identity of the war period owner of the coat – we have included an image of the inked name and date.
