Id’d Early Leather Covered Dome Top Traveling Trunk – Sea Captain Reuben Brumley – This is a superior example of an early to mid-19^th century, sea captain’s trunk. The wood constructed trunk is completely covered with black, bridle leather, with the exception of the bottom; the leather remains in excellent condition, with no cracking or flaking. The trunk retains its original lock and locking hasp and is lined in striped bed ticking, which remains in overall very good condition; both iron carrying handles remain. Affixed to one end of the trunk is a paper label that is hand-inked with the following:

64 Irving Place

New York”

Attached to the opposite end of the trunk are two labels; one is a baggage or shipping tag for the Long Island Railroad; the second tag, attached to the trunk via small upholstery nails, has the following hand-inked:

“R Brumley

64 Irving Place”

Brumley was born in 1779, in Connecticut; he became a sea captain, mastering ships plying the Atlantic between England and the U.S., in the first decades of the 1800s; he would later become a successful bank officer, in New York. In the 1835 New York census, Brumley’s occupation is listed as “Shipmaster”; in the 1857 New York census, Brumley is listed as an accountant, living at 64 Irving Place.
