Early War Ninth Plate Tintype of Union Infantry Soldier
$185
Early War Ninth Plate Tintype of Union Infantry Soldier – This ninth plate tintype depicts a bearded, Union infantryman, wearing a Hardee hat, with an infantry hat insignia, with a company letter in the crook of the horn; the soldier is outfitted in a M1858 nine button, enlisted frock coat with shoulder scales attached; his cartridge box sling and eagle plate are visible, and he is holding a musket. The image is in overall good condition, with good resolution; there are some bubbles in the emulsion. The image is contained in a complete case, with some fading and tears in the red velvet lining in the cover half. The original mat, preserver and cover glass remain. It is conceivable that this image is a period “copy image” made from an original ambrotype; the image offered here is definitively a Civil War period image, though its “copy” characteristics arise from the fact that it appears to have been laterally corrected. Regardless, it is still a great image.
