Civil War Issue Soldier’s Cup – This is a standard, Federal Issue, soldier’s drinking cup; these heavy gauge, tinned sheet iron cups were issued by the Army to many enlistees. The cup was not made via crimping joinery, but like most so-called “tinware” of the period, was joined by lead solder. The handle of these cups was affixed via a cylindrical pin, driven and peened into the body of the cup, at the bottom of the handle; the upper portion of the handle was either joined to the rim by two reinforcing wires or simply soldered to the rim. This example remains in overall very good condition, with some light rust spots and a larger patch of surface rust on the bottom of the cup; there are no weak areas or holes in the cup. These cups were an essential element for a soldier in the field; these could be used for drinking or cooking. This cup, as virtually all period issue cups, measures as follows:

Height – 4.25”; Diameter – 4.25”
