Civil War Period Brass Bugle with Original Cord – This war period bugle has been examined by one of the foremost, Civil War musical instrument authorities who pronounced that this instrument is definitively war period. The bugle exhibits period, dovetail construction in a longitudinal “ zipper-like” dovetail seam from the bell throughout the tubing. The bugle retains its original mouthpiece; the bell is reinforced by a period defining, “floating” garland. The bugle appears to have been exposed to weather or water at the bell area and is therefore somewhat tarnished and darkened; the bulk of the bugle exhibits a pleasing, aged brass-colored patina. The shorter, second “twist” is somewhat loose beneath the cording. The cord is an aged, gold-colored yellow and retains its war period, tasseled knots. There are no markings on the bugle indicating a manufacturer. The bugle measures approximately 16” in length. Civil War period bugles are not commonly found today.
