Model 1855 Rifle Saber Bayonet, Scabbard and Belt Frog – This M1855 saber bayonet, issued to accompany the M1855 rifle, is in superior condition. It retains its original scabbard which is in fine condition, as well, exhibiting a slight bend near the drag. The brightly finished blade and cast brass hilt are in equally strong condition. There are no maker’s marks on the bayonet; we found one, perhaps inspector’s mark, on the hilt, just distal to the section of the hilt where the gun muzzle enters. The overall length of the bayonet is approximately 26.5”, with the blade length at approximately 21.5”. The blade proper displays no nicks or evidence of sharpening. With this fine bayonet, is the not oft encountered belt frog, for use by an infantryman for attachment to his belt; we have had several of the M1855 Rifleman’s belts, but this is the first original, separate frog we have encountered.
