Presentation Sword – State of Pennsylvania State Seal on Scabbard Mount – This extremely high quality Civil War officer’s presentation foot officer or staff and field officer sword exhibits a high relief, integral depiction of the state seal of Pennsylvania on the upper scabbard mount. The hilt of the sword is a constructed of a decoratively incised German silver, with the ribbing filled by twisted silver wire. The brass pommel, knucklebow and quillon exhibit a high relief, decorative floral motif. The ricasso is stamped with the maker’s name: “COLLINS & CO HARTFORD CONN 1862”; just above the ricasso is the original, buff leather washer. The blade is replete with numerous, decoratively engraved, patriotic elements. The scabbard is constructed completely of shagreen or rayfin and is in excellent condition; all of the brass scabbard mounts and the drag are highly ornate, with relief decorative elements. This is a superior example of a high quality Civil War officer’s presentation sword.
