Civil War Frying Pan with Soldier Folk Art Painting of Advancing Union Troops

Civil War Frying Pan with Soldier Folk Art Painting of Advancing Union Troops – We have had various period equipment that depicts folk art painted or created by Civil War soldiers; this is the first, period frying pan we have seen with a battle scene painted on its bottom surface. This period, iron pan was painted, in a yellow color, to include the sides and food side of the pan; on the fire or heating side, the soldier carefully painted a large group of armed infantry soldiers, led by one individual carrying an American flag, marching, in formation, exhorted by two mounted officers, with two more mounted officers to the left of the closest two. Behind the group of infantry soldiers, are two artillery pieces, manned by gun crews, preparing to load and fire. In the distance, somewhat obscured, appears an additional flag and possibly some other troops. The soldier-artist also painted, rather well depicted trees in the distance. Although the remaining paint and scenes remain in stable condition, there are obvious areas of some significant paint loss; this does not deter from the primary, Civil War, military scene visible on the pan. This is a most unusual example of Civil War, soldier-generated, folk art.
