Civil War Model 1858 Smooth Side Canteen with Sky Blue Wool Cover – This canteen is an excellent example of a war period, M1858 issue, smooth side canteen; the canteen retains its original, sky-blue wool cover, which is in overall very good condition, with a very few areas of loss. The folded, cotton sling is complete and somewhat soiled from period use and postwar storage, but remains strong; the sling courses through the three extant sling guides. The canteen retains its original stopper and chain; the chain is linked, via the correct small hole, in one of the upper sling guides. The pewter spout exhibits no maker’s name, although there are two initials scratched in it. These blue wool covered canteens have always been markedly more difficult to find.
