Civil War Brass Band Drum Major’s Baton or Mace

Civil War Brass Band Drum Major’s Baton or Mace – Civil War period drum major’s maces are not common, although we have had two or three over the last few years; this example is one of the more unusual examples we have encountered – it is constructed entirely of brass – the two or three that we have had in the past, had a brass bulb and tip, with wooden shafts. This mace remains in overall very good condition, with some minor seam separation between the two halves of the bulb. In a small area on the lower half of the bulb is a small stamp of what we assume is the maker’s name:

“BESTONE      M & B”

(the letters M & B are within a small cloverleaf)

This is a most unusual example of Civil War band memorabilia.
