Pre-War to Civil War Period Cased Surgeon’s Kit by George Tiemann of New York – We have had some war period surgeon’s kits, but this kit, although somewhat simple, is the most complete example that we have had; additionally, the kit is definitively mid-1850s to mid-war period. The interior of the kit has two tiers, with the top tier containing the large and small bone saws – the rongeur or bone-nipper is missing (the only instrument missing from the kit); pulling the upper or covering tier up, reveals the lower tier which contains: a tourniquet, hemostat, four scalpels (large, medium and small tissue scalpels), scalpel guide and tenaculum; the grips of the saws and scalpels are made of checkered ebony; also in the lower tier is a small box-like compartment that contains various ligature needles. The entire interior of the kit is lined in red velvet, which remains in excellent condition. On the interior of the top of the box, affixed to the red velvet lining, is the gold embossed label for the manufacturer – Tiemann; the address for Tiemann, enumerated on this label, is 63 Chatham St., NY – this address was occupied by Tiemann from 1855 to late 1863, early 1864. The wooden box housing the instruments in this kit, appears to be mahogany; the wood remains in excellent condition, with a very few minor scratches; on the top of the exterior of the box top, is a brass escutcheon which is blank. This kit is a superior example of a Civil War surgeon’s kit, made by one of the foremost medical instrument makers of the mid-19th century.
