Escutcheon of Private Lucius R. Austin Co. A 1st NY Light Artillery Accompanied by His Shoulder Scales and Cap Insignia – We have had several personalized, Civil War soldier’s veteran’s shields or escutcheons, but this is the first that is accompanied by the soldier’s brass scales and cap insignia. The escutcheon, which has been attractively and archivally framed, features a central, calligraphically handwritten panel that enumerates Private Austin’s service record and honorable discharge, as well as his GAR membership. Surrounding the panel are chromolithographs of various episodes of the war to include the battle in Hampton Roads between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia, as well as idealized, war period battle scenes and a picture of President Abraham Lincoln, beneath which is a depiction of a GAR medal; all of the latter is surmounted by an American eagle and the inked words “Civil War” at the top of the escutcheon. At the bottom of the escutcheon is inked the following:

“Presented

By Comrade Austin to his Wife Jane and children Herbert E., Ettie L.,

Lewella, Viola    July 1913”

Prior to being archivally framed, the escutcheon was in an old, period frame which had a section of gray, cotton material with Private Austin’s enlisted man’s brass shoulder scales and cap insignia consisting of sheet brass, crossed cannons, hat company number “1”, company letter “A”, state letters designation “N Y” and two Eagle “A” cuff size buttons from Austin’s cap chinstrap; the now somewhat tattered, gray cloth (which is now housed in a pocket affixed to the back of the frame) exhibits the “ghosts” of the once mounted scales and insignia. The escutcheon remains in very good condition, with vivid colors and clear writing; there is a modest tear in the paper, at the top of the escutcheon which lays flat and is barely noticeable and only slightly intrudes into the lithographed, decorative elements.
