Hagner Type No. 2 Model 1872 Cartridge Box, Indian War Issue to Hold .50-70 Cartridges – These cartridge boxes were manufactured and issued to the U.S. Army starting in the early 1870s, for carrying .50-70 rounds. There are 24, interior, canvas loops to hold the metallic cartridges – three rows of eight loops, with one row on the exterior of the box face and two interior rows.. These boxes have standard, arsenal installed, brass rivets and finial. As with all Hagner boxes, the box body and flap are constructed of one piece of leather; the end caps and belt straps were added, via rivets or stitching. Also, as with all Hagner boxes, the right side of the box is bulged out to accept any of the period, combination, gun tools. On the front flap is a lightly embossed “US”; just above the belt loops, at the center of the back, body of the box, is stamped “No 2”. The box remains in very good condition, with some minor cracking to the finish, but no flaking. The leather remains supple and strong.
