Dug South Carolina Coat Coat Size Button with Uniform Cloth Attached to the Shank – This excavated, SC button retains an approximately 1” – 1.25” swatch of uniform cloth, still attached to the button’s shank. The button and cloth are in overall very good condition; some original, black thread remains visible sewn into the uniform cloth. The button, measuring about 23 mm, exhibits a palmetto tree, on the button’s face; the letters “S” and “C” appearing on the face, as well, separated by the trunk of the Palmetto tree. The South Carolina state motto – “Animis Opibusque Parati” (“Prepared in Mind and Resources”) – appears in raised letters, along the bottom of the rim, on the face. The shank is firmly in place, although the back mark is not discernible. This button dates to about 1860. The cloth remnant attached to the button, appears to be some form of butternut dyed wool. The button retains some gilt; the face, originally convex, is mildly pushed. Dug Confederate buttons with uniform cloth adhering are not common.
