Civil War Period Man’s Smoking Cap – In the Victorian era, gentlemen often donned a designated cap when smoking their pipe or cigar; this custom did not completely end during the vicissitudes of war. There are several images of Civil War soldiers, principally officers, wearing their smoking caps in camp, when enjoying their pipes or cigars. This example is definitively American made; the exterior is constructed of a fine, decoratively patterned silk, with a turquoise blue tassel attached to the exterior crown. The interior of the cap is lined in a sky-blue silk. The cap is completely hand sewn and remains in fine condition with some slight wear stains on the interior brim area.
