Confederate “Dog River” Enlisted Cavalryman’s Saber
SOLD
Confederate “Dog River” Enlisted Cavalryman’s Saber –This Confederate, enlisted man’s cavalry saber is an unmarked version that has often been referred to by collectors as a “Dog River” Confederate, cavalry saber; This saber, as most of the so-called “Dog River” swords, is patterned after the U.S. model 1840 Heavy Cavalry saber, nicknamed the “wristbreaker”. The nickname “Dog River” originated because some of the unmarked, Confederate cavalry sabers were manufactured by a factory on the Dog River, in Georgia. In actuality, most of the Confederate, unmarked sabers were manufactured throughout the South at large and small arsenals and retailers. The design of this saber is attributed to the Richmond, Virginia firm of Boyle & Gamble. The blade of this saber has an unstopped fuller; it retains its original, copper wire on the grip, although none of the leather remains covering the wooden grip. The guard and pommel cap have a deep, mustard-yellow patina. The guard and pommel cap exhibit the typical casting flaws found in many Confederate sabers. The blade exhibits a dark, gray color and is in overall good condition, with no nicks in the blade. The construction elements of this saber are indicative of the saber having been manufactured in Richmond, by the well-known, wartime firm, Boyle & Gamble. This is a fine example of a Confederate, enlisted cavalry soldier, manufactured in Richmond by one of the premier, Confederate arms makers.
