Large Carved Patriotic Motif Civil War Pipe – We have had several Civil War pipes; this example is one of the larger examples we have had – the walnut bowl is finely carved with a patriotic shield and two American flags, as well as some additional decorative elements. The pipestem is constructed of a long, trimmed tree branch with a horn mouthpiece. The pipe remains in superior condition, apparently not having been smoked much. Tobacco was more than just a recreational substance during the Civil War; it was a vital part of the soldiers’ experience and their social interactions – tobacco use provided soldiers with a sense of comfort and normalcy amidst the emotional demands of warfare; some even believed in the medicinal benefits of tobacco.
