Superior Example of a Civil War Folk Art Polychrome Painted and Relief Carved Cane – Although we have had some other, war period and veteran carved canes, this is by far, the most elaborately carved and polychromed painted cane we have had or, for that matter, seen. The cane appears to be made of a relatively soft wood, perhaps pine; it measures about 36” in length and remains in excellent condition, with no significant damage or scratching to the wood and retaining vivid colors to all the painted elements. The cane features relief carvings of multiple, war period corps badges, as well as a signal corps insignia; additionally, the carver added a finely executed American flag, complete with stars on the canton and red and white stripes. The bulbous hand area of the cane is painted in a dark, blue-green color, while the ground end is painted in gold, to simulate a brass or gold tip. We presume that the cane was carved either during the war by a wounded soldier or a veteran shortly after the war. This is an incomparable piece of Civil War period folk art.
