Presentation Cavalry Officer’s Sword – Lt. Col. John H. Budke NY Cavalry State Militia – This fine Id’d cavalry officer’s saber, presented to Lt. Col. John H. Budke, was manufactured by Collins & Co. of Hartford, Connecticut in 1862, and is marked as such on one side of the ricasso of the blade; the opposite side of the ricasso is acid etched with – “MILLER & Co. NEW – YORK.”. According to John Thillman’s seminal work “Civil War Cavalry and Artillery Sabers”, John Miller of New York City, was a war period military goods dealer and so-called assembler. The sword has a German silver hilt, wrapped in a single twisted, brass wire. The knucklebow and pommel are constructed of an ornate, floral motif brass and have an original, bullion officer’s sword knot attached. The scabbard, of a fine, lightly blued steel, has brass, highly decorative mounts. Finely engraved on the upper sword mount is the following:

This sword is really a work of sword crafting art; its blade is beautifully etched with wonderful patriotic motifs and remains in superior condition.

1844. COL. JOHN H. BUDKE. This sword belonged to Col. Budke of Troop A 3rd Regt. NGSNY. LT COL. John H Budke was born in Germany in the year 1824 & subsequently emigrated to America in 1844. He established a successful business in New York. He raised a German American militia regiment, attached to the 3rd Cavalry, for service in the Civil War. Budke & his regiment were engaged during the 1863 draft riots in New York. He is buried in Brooklyn, New York.

Brief History – The 3rd Regiment, New York Cavalry State Militia (3 months, 1861) They mustered out August 25, 1865.

In an auction a few years ago, some additional items owned by Lt. Col. Budke surfaced and were described as a “Collection of Civil War militaria consigned by a direct descendant of the original owner, Captain John H Budke. Budke was born in Germany in 1824 and emigrated to America in 1844, establishing successful New York businesses. According to family history, Budke raised a unit of German-American militia for New York and was mobilized as part of the Third Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. Budke was an officer during the infamous Draft Riots of 1863 and was brevetted a Colonel and died in Brooklyn NY, in 1896.

Budke’s epaulettes at the aforementioned sale, were described as follows: Description: LT. COL. JOHN H. BUDKE. These epaulettes belonged to Col. Budke of Troop A 3rd Regt. NGSNY. LT COL. He is buried in Brooklyn, New York. They have Col. eagles sewn to the top & yellow backed pillows w/ “3” attached (one “3” is loose but included in box). The underside is red velvet w/ “HORSTMANN BROTHERS & ALLIEN NEW YORK” embossed on brass clips. Original tin storage box included. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original purchase auction receipt stating that these epaulettes were obtained from the Yonkers home of a direct descendent of Capt. Budke.
