Confederate Copper CS Cartridge Box Plate

SOLD

Confederate Copper CS Cartridge Box Plate – This thin, Confederate, sheet copper belt plate was found in a Mississippi cotton field by a farmer, many years ago. Although the back elements are missing, it appears that this was a cartridge box plate. According to Mike O’Donnell and Howard Crouch, as delineated in their book “The Hammond Civil War Collection”, published in 2020 (this exact plate is pictured on page 277 in the O’Donnell and Crouch book about the Hammond collection), the plate cannot be discerned as having been die-struck or hand-worked. They suggest that the plate was likely a so-called “back-country piece” for use in outfitting a company of home guards. The plate, which retains Hammond’s inventory number “CS 14” on the back, remains in overall excellent condition.
