Original Civil War Model 1858 Infantry or Dismounted Enlisted Man’s Greatcoat – This fine example of the iconic, Union enlisted man’s, infantry or dismounted greatcoat remains in overall very good condition, exhibiting only a few minor insect nips and some light field wear. The heavy, kersey weave, sky blue wool, retains excellent color. These single-breasted greatcoats were designed to wear over the soldier’s uniform to combat cold weather and associated elements. As all Federal issue, dismounted overcoats, this example features a standing collar, elbow length cape and turn-over, wide cuffs. The cape, which is still firmly attached to the body of the coat, retains its original, six, general service, eagle buttons, and the front of the coat retains its original five, general service, eagle buttons. The back of the coat has its original two-part, size adjuster belt with two buttonholes and an eagle, general service button to assist in tightening the body of the coat. All of the buttonholes on this coat are hand whipped. The bottom of the skirts of the coat are unhemmed, per the correct period construction modes. The sleeve linings were originally made of a white cotton; one sleeve lining remains intact, while one is no longer in place. The interior of the coat has its original lining which is a dark-colored, heavy kersey weave wool. Finally, the period, japanned black hook and eye remain in place at the neck of the coat.
