Civil War Period Brogans – This is a rare pair of war period brogans that remain in overall good condition. To find original, period brogans is nearly impossible now, so this pair would suffice to add to any Civil War, military collection or display. Both brogans exhibit the construction mode and style of war period brogans – long, square-toed vamps; four, thin brass, encircled lace holes; interior counters, sewn in place from the exterior, at each heel; reinforcing rivets affixing each heel section to the vamp. It is conceivable that these brogans were constructed in England and shipped to the U.S. – possibly, through the blockade to the Confederacy. The British utilized early, iron split rivets in making their brogans, as well as the thin brass, lace eyelet liners; they did not utilize pegged or sewn soles, but preferred the more substantial nailed soles and heels, as evidenced in this pair of brogans. As mentioned, both brogans remain in relatively good condition, with some minor seam separations, wear folds and worn soles. This is only the third pair of original, Civil War period brogans we have had.
