Extremely Rare Civil War Elmira Prison Hospital Stencil – We have never encountered a stencil related to the infamous, New York, Civil War prison for Confederate POWs, located in Elmira, New York. This large, sheet brass, octagonal shaped stencil reads:  

“PRISONERS HOSPITAL 

ELMIRA, N.Y.” 

There is a small, circular hole, stamped in the stencil, in the upper left corner area, presumably for use in hanging the stencil on a nail or hook when not in use. The stencil is definitively period as the prison went out of use just after the war; we have had other items relate to Elmira, but we have never seen a stencil with Elmira connections. The stencil measures as follows: Width – 6.5”; Height – 3.5”
